General William L. Nyland USMC (Ret)
General William L. “Spider” Nyland currently serves on the Board of Directors for Gyrocam® Systems. In this role, he provides senior military insight and counsel to the company.

General Nyland retired from active duty on 5 November 2005. Prior to his retirement, he served as the Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps in Washington, D.C.

Previously, General Nyland served as Deputy Director for Force Structure and Resources for the Joint Staff. He later assumed duties as the Deputy Commanding General, II Marine Expeditionary Force, at Camp Lejeune and later as the Commanding General, 2d Marine Aircraft Wing at MCAS Cherry Pt..  Subsequent to command, General Nyland was advanced to Lieutenant General and assumed the duties of Deputy Commandant for Programs and Resources, Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps. His next assignment was as the Deputy Commandant for Aviation.  In September 2002 he was advanced to General and assumed duties as the Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps.

Throughout his military career, General Nyland has received several honors, including the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal with eight Strike/Flight awards and the Joint Service Commendation Medal.

General Nyland earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of New Mexico, and his Master of Science from the University of Southern California. His formal military education includes The Basic School (1968), Naval Aviation Flight Training (1969), Amphibious Warfare School (1975), Navy Fighter Weapons School (1977), College of Naval Command and Staff, Naval War College (1981) and Air War College (1988).

General Nyland also serves on a number of committees and is the Chairman of the Board for the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation and is the National Commander for the Marine Corps Aviation Association.
